Matir Kanya

In 2016, Tagore Music Group, for the very first time, presented an English drama. This was an English adaptation of Tagore’s drama Chandalika (The Untouchable). The songs in it were presented in their original Bengali… however the dialogues were in English. Subtitles were provided for the songs. It was an experimental project, which turned out to be by far the organization’s best-ever project. This drama was staged again in 2017 at Sanskriti’s (the local Bengali Organization’s) Durga Puja festivities and again in 2019, by invitation, at the prestigious ICCR Hall at Kolkata.

Poetry of Love - From Jayadev to Javed

In spite of the hard work, stress, and expense, Tagore Music Group decided to continue the trend of Drama Duos even in 2018 with the presentation of two dramas in one evening.

One was a musical drama based on the eternal and ethereal love story of Lord Krishna and Srimati Radha, his Lady Love. At the tender age of 15, Tagore had written 20 or so verses on this subject, following the writing style and language of the ancient poets of India, a language called Brajabuli, which is a combination of Bengali and Maithili. He had heard of the young English poet Thomas Chatterton who was in the habit of copying the styles of the ancient poets. The Young Tagore thought that he too could do something similar. Indeed, his verses were so captivating, and so similar to the ancient poets’ writings, that they fooled the intelligentsia of that era. Even today,, Tagore's verses are considered among the best-ever written on Lord Krishna and Sri Radha’s love story.

Karna-Kunti Sambad (Mother & Son - A Discourse)

In April of 2018, two unique dramas were presented.

The first was “Mother and Son – A Discourse” - the English adaptation of Tagore’s iconic poem written on a politically and sentimentally charged episode from the Indian Epic Mahabharata.

It was short, but succinct and left a lasting impression on the audience.
